Bavaria Germanair was a German charter airline based in Munich and based at Munich-Riem Airport . It emerged from the merger of the companies Bavaria Fluggesellschaft and Germanair and eventually merged with Hapag-Lloyd Flug .
history
The Munich entrepreneur Josef Schörghuber bought the Germanair airline in 1970 . Four years later, the Schörghuber Group also took over Bavaria Fluggesellschaft . Both companies initially continued to fly under their own brand names, but coordinated their cooperation through a joint management team. On March 1, 1977, the two airlines merged to form Bavaria Germanair .
Even before the merger, it became known that Josef Schörghuber was looking for a partner for his airline. In particular, the upcoming renewal of the fleet, which mainly consisted of cost-intensive and noise-intensive BAC 1-11 , represented a considerable investment risk that he did not want to dare to go it alone. After unsuccessful negotiations with Bayerische Landesbank and Lufthansa , he was able to win over the airline Hapag-Lloyd Flug for talks, which was only interested in a majority stake. Josef Schörghuber took this opportunity and sold Bavaria Germanair to Hapag-Lloyd Flug just one month after its merger . The Federal German Cartel Office assessed this sale critically. Hapag-Lloyd was initially not allowed to integrate the acquired company into its own airline, but had to continue to operate under the name Bavaria Germanair .
After the approval of the Cartel Office for a merger of the two companies was available at the end of 1978, Bavaria Germanair was fully integrated into Hapag-Lloyd Flug in January 1979 . This is now part of TUIfly .
