Sundair is a German scheduled and charter airline with administrative headquarters in Stralsund and a business base near Berlin-Schönefeld Airport .

history

Sundair was founded in the spring of 2016 by the managing director of the Berlin IT company "Air 41", Marcos Rossello, in Stralsund .

In September 2016, the tour operator Schauinsland-Reisen took over 50% of the shares in Sundair. The original plan was to lease three Airbus A319-100s and station them at Berlin-Tegel , Frankfurt am Main and Kassel-Calden airports .

The start of flight operations in Frankfurt am Main, initially planned for April 2017, has been postponed to July 2017. The reason for the delayed start was the procurement of larger Airbus A320-200s , which were to be used instead of the originally planned A319-100 in order to prevent potential capacity bottlenecks.

Since the A320-200s ordered, which are being serviced in Abu Dhabi , should not be ready for use until the end of July, seating capacities were chartered from other airlines in order to commence operations from Berlin-Tegel and Kassel-Calden. At the beginning of July 2017, Marcos Rossello announced that the jets should start the Sundair service at the end of the month. By then, the operator license (AOC) applied for as a German airline should also be available from the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt . In fact, the operating license was only issued in September 2017, so that flight operations with the first in-house aircraft could not begin until September 27, 2017.

An expansion of the fleet by two Airbus A319-100s, which was planned in February 2018, was later dropped in April of the same year; the company announced that it would continue to operate solely with A320-200 aircraft.

In June 2018, two Airbus A320-200s previously used by Air Berlin were purchased in order to double the fleet to four aircraft. In September 2018 it was announced that these two aircraft would be operated for Germania from November 2018 and March 2019 to March 2020 in order to bridge the time until their delivery of the A320neo . Germania filed for bankruptcy in February 2019, so Sundair will no longer operate the machines for the former.

In January 2019, the takeover of two Airbus A319-100s from the inventory of the Chilean Sky Airline was announced. The aircraft will be leased for a period of four years from BBAM, an aircraft leasing company based in San Francisco. One of the machines was stationed in a wet lease for TUIfly in Karlsruhe in summer 2019 .

Due to delays in the fleet management of the two Airbus A319-100s , a wet lease from the Romanian Just Us Air from Kassel-Calden was used between June and October 2019 . On August 13, 2019, the company's first Airbus A319-100 was finally put into operation and shortly afterwards stationed for TUIfly in Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden.

On October 1, 2019, Gerald Kassner, Managing Director of Sundair's shareholder Schauinsland-Reisen , announced in an interview that they were planning to add another Airbus A320-200 from the stock of the insolvent Aigle Azur so that the fleet would grow to seven machines . In November 2019, TUIfly announced in a press release that it would expand its cooperation with Sundair, so that in addition to the Airbus A319-100 at Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport , an Airbus A320-200 will also be stationed at Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport in summer 2020 .

In February 2020, Sundair and Schauinsland-Reisen presented an Airbus A320 in the Katta-macht-Urlaub design, which has been in use at Bremen Airport since March 2, 2020 with the aircraft registration D-ANNA .

Destinations

Sundair operates regular charter flights from the German airports Berlin-Tegel , Dresden , Bremen and Kassel-Calden to the Mediterranean , the Canary Islands , the Red Sea and Bulgaria . In addition, individual charter flights are carried out for special events or for special occasions. The scheduled flight connection between Berlin and Beirut is also served.
