The European Air Express Luftverkehrs GmbH & Co. KG ( EAE for short ) was a German regional airline based in Mönchengladbach and based on the Mönchengladbach airfield .
history
The company was founded in December 1998 after the British airline Debonair Airways announced that it would discontinue the flight connection to Munich from the Mönchengladbach airfield. The previous Germany manager of Debonair Airways, Peter Hauptvogel jr., Then founded EAE and continued the connection between Mönchengladbach and Munich from February 8, 1999 with a Fokker 50 rented by the Dutch Denim Air . In the summer of 1999 EAE operated the Mönchengladbach - Westerland route at short notice . On October 11, 1999 EAE took over another route previously served by Debonair Airways with the Mönchengladbach - London connection .
After EAE had received its own operating license, the company set up its own flight operations and put two 46-seat ATR 42-300 into service in April 2000 . The company intended to open numerous new connections from the Mönchengladbach airfield, including a. to Hamburg , Nuremberg and Berlin . However, these plans were not implemented.
The partial takeover of the largest German regional airline Eurowings by Lufthansa , which was announced in September 2001, resulted in new business areas for EAE, which led to the strategic realignment of EAE: Lufthansa and Eurowings had to give up some of their domestic German connections for antitrust reasons. EAE took over these routes that were launched on the market. From October 2001 the connections Dortmund - Munich and Paderborn / Lippstadt - Munich, from March 2002 Munster / Osnabrück - Stuttgart and Dortmund - Stuttgart were served by EAE. Not only these new routes came from Eurowings to EAE, but also five ATR 42-300 turboprop aircraft and the previous Eurowings board member Ulrich Sigmann. Company founder Peter Hauptvogel jr. left EAE at the end of 2000.
This development went hand in hand with a reduction in activities at Mönchengladbach Airport . There the connection to London was initially given up , later also to Munich . From 2002 EAE became increasingly involved at Cologne / Bonn Airport . Since then, various destinations have been served from there, including a. Kiel , Breslau , Poznan , Geneva and Nuremberg.
In 2006 the activities of EAE were concentrated on the locations Münster / Osnabrück (four routes) and Cologne / Bonn (two routes). The managing director of 90 employees at the time was Ulrich Sigmann , the administration, reservations and the own shipyard were still at Mönchengladbach airfield.
On July 31, 2007, EAE ceased service and on September 30, 2007 the company was completely dissolved.
