Paninternational was a German airline with headquarters in Munich and bases at Munich-Riem and Düsseldorf airports .

history

The company was founded in 1968 under the name PANAIR by the Munich tour operator Paneuropa . However, after an objection by Pan Am , the name had to be changed, as Pan Am owned the rights to Panair (see for example Panair do Brasil ). Flight operations began in 1970. Paninternational also flew to European holiday destinations for other tour operators with two new BAC 1-11 . In order to be able to fly to more distant destinations, in addition to another new BAC 1-11, two used Boeing 707-120s were taken over by American Airlines in 1970 , which then took over the intercontinental routes and were in service until the company was dissolved.

fleet

The fleet consisted of six aircraft:

incident

  • On September 6, 1971, a Paninternational (D-ALAR) BAC 1-11 , which was to carry out a flight to Málaga , suffered a double engine failure shortly after taking off from Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel . During a subsequent emergency landing on Autobahn 7, the machine collided with a bridge pier. 22 of the 121 people on board died. The accident occurred because of a maintenance error: the tanks for the water injection to increase the take-off performance of the engines were accidentally filled with kerosene instead of pure demineralized water . The accident ushered in the end of the airline (see also Paninternational flight 112 ) .
