Aviaction (officially Aviaction - Hanseatische Luftreederei GmbH Co. KG ) was a German charter airline that ceased operations in 1973.

history

Aviaction was founded on December 22nd, 1969 by private investors in Hamburg. The company ordered in the summer of 1970 three jet aircraft of the type Fokker F28-1000 from which they received the first on February 26, 1971st The 65-seat Fokker was seen as the ideal aircraft to serve routes that the larger charter airlines Atlantis , Bavaria , Condor , Germanair and LTU did not cover. The company was able to win several tour operators , including Touristik Union International (TUI), as contractual partners and began operations on March 28, 1971 with a charter flight from Hamburg to Palma de Mallorca . In April and July 1971 Aviaction received their two other Fokker F28s . The Norwegian airline Braathens SAFE was entrusted with the maintenance of the three aircraft .

In November 1971, the subsidiary Aviaction Kassel Flugouristik was founded , which from the spring of 1972 carried out IT charter flights from Kassel-Calden Airport to the Mediterranean region with a Fokker F28 from the parent company . Aviaction got into economic difficulties in the winter of 1972/73 due to unexpectedly high operating costs and the insufficient utilization of their aircraft. Because the range of the Fokker F28 was too short, the company was unable to offer non-stop connections to the important winter destinations in the Canary Islands and lost orders as a result. For this reason, a machine was leased to Braathens SAFE for three months in January 1973 and the order for a fourth Fokker was canceled.

In the summer of 1973, the financial situation led the company to look for new investors. The Danish charter airline Sterling Airways initially showed interest in a takeover, particularly in order to gain a foothold in the German charter market, but did not implement the project. Aviaction ceased operations at the end of the summer season on October 30, 1973 because they could no longer settle their current liabilities.
