history

A Germanair Fokker F28 in 1973

The Germanair airline emerged from Südwestflug GmbH , which was founded in Baden-Baden in 1964 . The Stuttgart company Contracta , which marketed holiday homes in southern Europe, took a majority stake in Südwestflug in spring 1965 . In September 1965, the first of three Douglas DC-6s was acquired, with which the company flew potential customers on house tours to Spain and the Canary Islands . After several changes of ownership, the company was renamed Germanair on September 1, 1968 and the company headquarters moved to Frankfurt .

The Germanair GmbH was able to quickly many tour operators as customers and ordered new aircraft type BAC 111-500 . Because these were not yet available in the 1969 summer season, the company used a leased Douglas DC-9-15 and a BAC 111-400 in addition to its own Douglas DC-6 . On October 16, 1969, Germanair took over the first of their six BAC 111-500s and at the same time phased out the propeller-driven DC-6s. In the 1970 financial year, the company carried around 470,000 passengers with a pure jet fleet. In the autumn of 1970 Germanair GmbH was bought up by the Munich entrepreneur Josef Schörghuber , who had also had a minority stake in Bavaria Fluggesellschaft since 1968 . In the spring of 1971, the company ordered four Fokker F28 aircraft , which were used from 1972. In the winter of 1971/72 a technical cooperation developed with the airline Atlantis , in which the Schörghuber group of companies was also involved. For further expansion were wide-body aircraft of the type Airbus A300 ordered. With the delivery of the first aircraft on May 23, 1975 , Germanair became the first German operator of this aircraft type.

At the end of 1974, Bavaria Fluggesellschaft became the sole property of the Schörghuber group of companies, which resulted in close cooperation with Germanair . In May 1975 Ernst Uhl was appointed joint managing director of the two companies. Both airlines continued to fly under their own brand identity, but cooperated in all areas with a view to a desired merger. This was completed on March 1, 1977. The airline Bavaria Germanair emerged from the merger, which - after further mergers - has now been incorporated into TUIfly .
