DHL Aviation N.V./S. A. (formerly DHL Worldwide Express ) is a Belgian cargo airline based in Zaventem and based at Leipzig / Halle Airport . It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Post AG . DHL Aviation is the largest cargo-only airline in Europe and the third largest air cargo company in the world by fleet size . DHL Aviation is not an aviation company within the meaning of EU regulation 1008/2008.

history

Douglas DC-8-73F from DHL Aviation in 2001

DHL Aviation emerged from the former DHL Operations B.V. after the relocation of the European air freight hub from Brussels to Leipzig / Halle Airport in spring 2008 and the associated establishment of European Air Transport Leipzig in Schkeuditz initially only as a maintenance company. Until 2010, the headquarters of European Air Transport , DHL's largest European cargo airline, remained in Brussels , as did the headquarters of DHL Aviation. In March 2010, EAT Brussels aircraft were transferred to the cargo airlines Air Contractors and European Air Transport Leipzig. The European Air Transport in Brussels was dissolved and taken over by the European Air Transport Leipzig GmbH. DHL Aviation is just a superordinate structural unit that does not have its own machines.

Holdings

DHL Aviation is not an airline, but an umbrella organization for various airlines in many parts of the world, most of which are wholly or partly owned by DHL or Deutsche Post. These include:

Deutsche Post operates four main airlines that offer services worldwide and are wholly owned by Post:

Some of the EAT Brussels aircraft have been taken over by Air Contractors , who are responsible for long-haul flights to the Middle East and Africa.

DHL Aviation itself has a fleet of over 100 aircraft of various types, but also leases aircraft or cargo space from other freight companies, depending on requirements. Deutsche Post also owns shares in the following airlines, some of which also fly under the DHL brand:

The former American cargo airline Astar Air Cargo was called DHL Airways from 1983 and therefore also carried the ICAO code DHL . It was sold by Deutsche Post in 2003 and then got its old name back, but for a long time flew almost exclusively for DHL. After the expiry of the contract with DHL on June 1, 2012, Astar Air Cargo ceased operations. The remaining eight Douglas DC-8s were decommissioned. The US company ABX Air also works for DHL. Both were or are the largest cargo airlines of DHL, which are not owned by Deutsche Post. In India, the cargo airline Blue Dart Aviation Limited , a subsidiary of Blue Dart Express Limited Mumbai, operates cargo flights independently. Blue Dart Aviation, in turn, is partially owned by Deutsche Post.
