Saarland Airlines was a German charter airline based in Düsseldorf and based at Düsseldorf Airport .
history
Saarland Airlines was founded at the beginning of 1992 by the Saarland entrepreneur Josef Tabellion and Turkish business partners in order to take over the charter connections of the insolvent Noble Air from Düsseldorf . Flight operations began on April 4, 1992 between Düsseldorf and Dalaman with a Boeing 737-300 leased from the Danish Maersk Air . From October 1992 the company started using a leased Boeing 737-300 in its own color scheme. The company took over Hamburg Airlines in December 1992 , whereby its owner Eugen Block received a 20 percent stake in Saarland Airlines in exchange . The entrepreneur Hans Rudolf Wöhrl , founder of the regional airline Nürnberger Flugdienst , also owned shares in the company.
In spring 1993, Saarland Airlines expanded its fleet with two leased Airbus A320-200s . The company mainly operated IT charter flights to Portugal and Turkey on behalf of the German tour operator MP Travel Line . When this tour operator went bankrupt in late June 1993, the company's economic existence was in jeopardy. In order to ensure the continued existence of the airline, the MP Touristik rescue company was founded, in which Saarland Airlines held a 20 percent stake and its CEO, Jürgen Nappe, 80 percent.
The MP tourism took over the existing charter agreements of MP Travel Line but also their liabilities. The amount of debt, the costs for the return transport of the holidaymakers and the simultaneous drop in booking numbers led to the bankruptcy of the rescue company on July 28, 1993. Saarland Airlines was subsequently unable to win any new tour operators as customers and, as a result, could no longer use their aircraft to capacity. The company ceased flight operations in December 1993 and filed for bankruptcy shortly thereafter.
