Gene Criss

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gene Criss is an American rockabilly musician.

Life

Criss had a relatively short career in the 1950s. With his band, the Hep Cats , he played in a club in Virginia during this time. Cees Klop, owner of Collector Records , found Criss in the 1970s and was able to find out some details about his career. His single, Hep Cat Baby / I Don't Know , was recorded in Criss' kitchen with his band and released on the Portsmouth, Virginia, rhythm label. Rhythm was a small label that was run by the Phelps Brothers and operated with the help of Fernwood Records of Memphis , Tennessee , so the single was only released in limited numbers. After the single was released, Criss retired from the music business and began working as a gardener.

Two of Criss 'recordings were first released in 1989 on the Dutch white label LP Rockin' Peg and have appeared repeatedly on compilations in the following years. There are currently two of Criss's recordings on the Virginia Rocks! The History of Rockabilly in the Commonwealth commercially available.
