Cirrus Airlines was a German airline based in Saarbrücken and based at Saarbrücken Airport .
history
The airline was founded in 1995 by the entrepreneur Gerd Brandecker based in Saarbrücken . After the first scheduled flight in March 1998 between Saarbrücken and Hamburg , the company's route network was steadily expanded and included destinations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland until flight operations were discontinued .
From 2000 the company belonged to the Lufthansa team, had been a partner of Lufthansa since its dissolution in 2004 and offered codeshare flights in cooperation with Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines and Air Moldova . In December 2004 the Cirrus Group took over Augsburg Airways . Cirrus Airlines has been a member of IATA since 2005 . In May 2007 the ATON group joined Cirrus.
On January 9, 2008, Cirrus Airlines announced that it would relocate its headquarters from Saarbrücken-Ensheim to Munich Airport for economic reasons and combine the offices there with its sister company Augsburg Airways. In March 2008 there was a reorientation towards business travelers. Hallbergmoos , directly at Munich Airport, was the new headquarters for almost two years . The independent companies Cirrus Technik and Cirrus Flight Training remained in Saarbrücken-Ensheim and Zweibrücken, respectively. In the same year, Cirrus Airlines joined the Federation of German Airlines .
Gerd Brandecker sold his remaining 49% stake in the Cirrus Group to Aton GmbH in August 2008 and withdrew from the company. At the end of December 2008, Cirrus Airlines , Cirrus Technik , Cirrus Flight Training and nana tours were separated from the Cirrus Group and sold to Aviation Investment, owned by Cirrus founder Gerd Brandecker. Aviation Investment GmbH became the sole shareholder of Cirrus Airlines. The Cirrus Group with the companies DC Aviation and Augsburg Airways remained in the possession of Aton.
On December 31, 2009, Cirrus Technik GmbH was liquidated. Most of the employees were transferred to the new Cirrus Maintenance GmbH , a subsidiary of Cirrus Airlines .
In January 2010, Ingrid Schultheis was appointed to the management alongside Gerd Brandecker. The headquarters of Cirrus Airlines , which was relocated to Munich in 2008 , returned to Saarbrücken in January 2010. In the course of this restructuring, the headquarters of Cirrus Airlines, Cirrus Maintenance, Cirrus Service and nana tours were completely merged at the Saarbrücken location. In July 2010 Gerd Brandecker retired from the management to concentrate on his role as a partner. Jan Bresler became the new managing director alongside Ingrid Schultheis.
On the afternoon of January 20, 2012, Cirrus Airlines discontinued scheduled operations and flight bookings at short notice and without further notification until further notice. On January 23, 2012, Cirrus Airlines and Cirrus Service filed for bankruptcy.
At the end of March 2012, OLT Express Germany announced that it wanted to take over several departments of Cirrus Airlines and set up a base in Saarbrücken. However, the fleet and the flying personnel would not be taken over. At the beginning of May 2012, however, the takeover was canceled without giving any reason. OLT Express itself also filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of 2013.
Destinations
In 2011, Cirrus Airlines served Bern , Dresden , Hamburg , Hof-Plauen , Münster / Osnabrück , Salzburg , Frankfurt am Main , Stuttgart , Munich , Mannheim and Erfurt-Weimar as well as Vienna and Zurich . Some of the planes also flew in wet lease across Europe for Lufthansa and Swiss . Cirrus Airlines also offered charter flights , for example for sports teams or companies.
At the end of October 2010, the Hamburg – Mannheim route was no longer served. From April 29, 2011 to May 16, 2011 the Frankfurt – Hof route was temporarily suspended. On December 22, 2011, the Mannheim – Berlin route was discontinued after 12 years. A day later, Erfurt – Munich was also given up after eight years.

In the past, Cirrus Airlines also operated other models that were retired in the course of the fleet modernization and harmonization. These include Beechcraft Super King Air 200 , Boeing 737-500 , De Havilland Canada DHC-8-100 and DHC-8-300 , Embraer ERJ 145 , Embraer 175 , CRJ200 (operated by Adria Airways ) and Dornier 328-300 .
Trivia
- Cirrus Airlines was the first operator to introduce the Embraer 170 in Germany.
- A Dornier 328 from Cirrus Airlines with the registration number D-CIRP was the last scheduled flight to leave Berlin-Tempelhof Airport on October 30, 2008 at 10:17 p.m. for Mannheim before it was closed.
- More than three years after the bankruptcy, there was advertising for Cirrus Airlines on the boards of the Bosenbach Stadium in St. Wendel .
Incidents
- On March 19, 2008 the Dornier 328-100 with the registration D-CTOB on the flight from Berlin-Tempelhof to Mannheim came off the runway when landing in Mannheim and collided with an earth wall behind the end of runway 27. Five of the 24 passengers were slightly injured and the three-person crew got away with it. The machine was badly damaged.
