Polar Air Cargo Worldwide, Inc. is a US cargo airline headquartered in Purchase and based at John F. Kennedy International Airport . It is 51% owned by Atlas Air Worldwide Holding and 49% by the German logistics group DHL .
history
Polar Air Cargo was founded in 1993 through a joint venture between Southern Air Transport and GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) . Flight operations began in June 1993 with charter flights with a Boeing 747-200 , followed later by scheduled flights . After several years of constant growth, Polar Air Cargo was completely taken over by GECAS. In 2001 the company was taken over by Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings (AAWW), the parent company of Atlas Air . Atlas Air is a leading ACMI cargo aircraft leasing company. Polar became the cargo provider for scheduled flights for AAWW, while Atlas Air continues to operate the business as a wet lease provider for Boeing 747 cargo aircraft. In 2006 DHL acquired 49% of the shares in Polar Air Cargo, but AAWW is still the main shareholder.
Destinations
Polar Air Cargo operates scheduled cargo flights around the world. For example, the company flies to China in a scheduled service and connects Shanghai and Beijing with New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, South America and several destinations in Asia and Europe, including Leipzig / Halle.
