CommutAir is an American airline based in North Olmsted , Ohio with its main base in Cleveland, Ohio. It flies under the name United Express for United Airlines .
history
CommutAir was founded in 1989 by Antony von Elbe, John Sullivan and Jim Drollette in Plattsburgh . In addition, they took over the successful Clinton Aero based in Plattsburgh and part of the Brockway Airline Division. CommutAir started operating on August 1st, 1989. She initially had a code share agreement with US Airways and flew two Beech 1900Ds as US Airways Express , but switched to Continental Airlines in 2000 after US Airways did not renew the contract. In July 2001 flight operations were cut in half in order to reorganize the company. In early 2002, CommutAir started again with a "micro-hub" in Albany, New York. At its peak from 2003 to 2004, the hub served 15 cities in the northeastern United States and Canada. 8 cities were served by Boston. The routes were not profitable and the lines were discontinued.
In January 2003, a new agreement was signed between CommutAir and Continental Airlines and the base was relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. Operations began on March 16, 2003 with flights to Kalamazoo, Michigan and Elmira, New York and expanded to 12 cities by August 2003.
On September 30, 2007, the Commutair home base at Plattsburgh International Airport was closed and relocated to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
On October 1, 2010, the UAL Corporation and Continental Airlines merged to form United Continental Holdings . As a result of the merger, the regional partner of Continental Airlines, Continental Connection, also became a partner of United Express . CommutAir is now a partner of United Express.
