The Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System ( JPATS , colloquially Con Air ), founded in 1995 , is a US facility of the United States Marshals Service . Your task is to transport prisoners from the so-called. Federal prisoners ( Federal Inmates ) and other, for which an exclusive government-owned " airline " is maintained. The JPATS emerged from the US Marshals Service's National Prisoner Transportation System .
tasks and activities
The JPATS transports convicted criminals on behalf of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and illegal aliens in aircraft with a high security standard. In addition to air traffic, the JPATS also transports prisoners by bus or van if a flight is not possible.
Flight operations
The JPATS operates four Boeing 727s and four McDonnell Douglas MD-83s . There are also two Boeing 737-400s in use. Small aircraft are also chartered . An average of over 260,000 prisoners and illegal aliens are transported annually. For this purpose, a total of 42 cities inside and outside the USA are regularly served, with further major cities as required.
The flight plan , the aircraft used and the flight route are kept secret in order to avoid an escape or a release of prisoners . The prisoners are transported tied around their feet, hands and hips . The prisoners are only allowed to speak if asked or requested to do so by officials. Flight attendants are exclusively uniformed US marshals, 15 on each aircraft. Own aircraft do not have a label and are painted white, and the charter aircraft do not have JPATS or US Marshals identification.
Others
- When all non-military flights in the airspace of the United States were stopped by the FAA during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the JPATS was the only civil "airline" allowed to continue flying.
- The 1997 film Con Air, starring Nicolas Cage, has a mutiny aboard a JPATS flight as its theme (a Fairchild C-123 is shown in the film ; however, this model is not actually used by JPATS).
- In the 1998 film On the Hunt with Tommy Lee Jones and Wesley Snipes in the leading roles, a JPATS prisoner transport is shown in which the aircraft (Boeing 727) used crashes.
