Alexandria is a city in the US state of Louisiana and the administrative seat of Rapides Parish . It is located on the banks of the Red River in the middle of the state.
The place received city rights in 1882.
In 1853, the Roman Catholic diocese of Alexandria was established under the then name diocese of Natchitoches . The cathedral, under the patronage of St. Francis Xavier , was consecrated in 1899.

Alexandria is one of several Louisiana State University campuses under the Louisiana State University system .

Sports
The Alexandria Warthogs were an American ice hockey team from Alexandria. The team only existed from 1998 to 2000 and played in the Western Professional Hockey League .
