history

Foundation and first years

A Metroliner in Santa Barbara in 1988

In 1972 Ralph Atkin founded Seneca SkyWest Airlines with a Piper PA-34 after purchasing Dixie Airlines. The first flight was from St. George with a stopover in Cedar City to Salt Lake City . The beginning was difficult, and by 1975 the company had a loss of 300,000 US dollars . Thereafter, the administration, the staff and the number of aircraft were reduced.

By 1979 SkyWest had recovered and three 19-seat Fairchild Metro IIs were procured. A new administration building and maintenance center was built in St. George. In 1984 SkyWest bought Sun Air . The fleet increased to 26 machines and a new maintenance center was opened in Palm Springs. In 1985 the headquarters were moved from the airport to the center of St. George. In the same year, a code-sharing agreement was signed with Western Airlines and since then feeder flights have flown to their Salt Lake City hub. In 1986 the airline went public as SkyWest Inc. Delta Airlines took over Western Airlines and also the deal. In 1987 Delta Airlines took over 20% of SkyWest. In the same year, SkyWest took over Color Canyon Air Service and changed its name to Cedar City Air Service . The first Embraer EMB 120s were deployed from Palm Springs and the fleet increased to 41 machines.

In 1991 SkyWest served 42 cities in eight US states with a fleet of 15 Embraer EMB 120 and 35 metros. In 1994 SkyWest received its first Bombardier CRJ . The takeover of Scenic Airlines followed . From 1995 SkyWest flew from Los Angeles International Airport for Continental Airlines and from 1997 flights for United Airlines. As United Express , the offer was extended to the hubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver and the agreement with Continental was terminated.

Since 2000

From 2003 to 2005 there was a code-sharing agreement with Continental and SkyWest flew as a Continental Connection from Houston . A new agreement with United Airlines followed for eleven years. In 2005, Delta Airlines offered SkyWest the purchase of its subsidiary Atlantic Southeast Airlines and on September 8th SkyWest Inc. took over the company. In 2007, new agreements with Midwest Airlines and Delta Airlines followed, and SkyWest has been operating from Salt Lake City as Delta Connection since then.
