Jetblue Airways , proprietary notation jetBlue Airways , is an American low-cost airline with headquarters in New York City and aviation hub in the local John F. Kennedy International Airport .
history
The company was founded in 1998 by David Neeleman , a former employee of Southwest Airlines , and began operations in 2000. Today it is the fifth largest airline in the United States. It is owned by JetBlue Corporation , which is listed on NASDAQ . On January 22, 2008 Lufthansa announced the takeover of around 42 million newly issued shares from Jetblue Airways. This corresponds to a share of 19 percent for a total price of around 300 million US dollars. In 2008, Jetblue Airways founded Azul, a Brazilian airline. In October 2013, Jetblue made the 10,000. A320 Family aircraft ordered. On April 25, 2016, Jetblue Airways received the first Airbus aircraft built in the USA with the delivery of an Airbus A321.
Companies
The airline is known for its higher standard of service compared to other budget airlines. So this is, for example, frequent flyer program True Blue as part of the company's philosophy as an in-flight entertainment system that provides screens with TV reception at every seat. In addition, unlike many other US companies, there is no fee for the first checked bag. The airline had sales of $ 6.6 billion in 2016 and net income was $ 759 million.
The service standard has been limited since 2016. Each piece of luggage costs 20 or 25 dollars extra in the cheapest ticket class, and 12 additional seats are planned for the Airbus A320 (which reduces the seat pitch from 88 cm to 84 cm).
Destinations
In 2016, Jetblue flew to a total of 100 airports in the USA , the Caribbean and Latin America , carrying over 38 million passengers, an increase in the number of passengers of 8.5% compared to the previous year. The offer is constantly being expanded.

Incidents
The airline has had no casualties or aircraft casualties in its history. However, two incidents received widespread media attention:
- On September 21, 2005, an Airbus A320-200 had to make an emergency landing on JetBlue Flight 292 with 139 passengers and six crew members on board at Los Angeles Airport. The reason for this was a defect in the nose wheel, which had rotated 90 degrees and could not be retracted after take-off. The machine, named Canyon Blue, was on its way from Burbank to New York and had to circling over the Pacific for several hours to consume fuel before the emergency landing . Then she touched down on the runway and came to a safe stop. Nobody was hurt.
- On March 28, 2012, a flight captain on Flight 191 from New York to Las Vegas triggered an emergency landing due to his frightening behavior. In a state of mental confusion, he left the cockpit, whereupon the copilot locked the door. When the captain made incoherent remarks about terror and religion in the cabin and rattled the door to the cockpit, he had to be overpowered and held by several passengers until the copilot landed the plane in Amarillo, Texas . People were not harmed.
