American Water Works Company ( Amwater for short ) is an American water utility company based in Voorhees , New Jersey . American Water was founded as the American Water Works & Guarantee Company in 1886 and renamed American Water Works Company, Inc. in 1947 .

The company was bought by RWE on January 10, 2003 and renamed American Water . American Water has over 18 million customers in 29 US states and Canada . In October 2008, American Water had over 7,000 employees.

American Water was on April 23, 2008 IPO at the Exchange New York Stock accommodated. After that, RWE Aqua Holdings GmbH will only hold 60.5 percent of American Water. On June 5, 2009, RWE further reduced its stake to a minority stake of 49%. The complete phase-out took place at the end of November 2009.
