The Kirby Corporation is an American barge shipping company based in Houston . It owns 901 tank barges and 241 tugs for the American inland waterways as well as 69 tank barges and 80 tugs for coastal shipping. The main goods in transit are fuels and petrochemicals.

The company was founded in 1921 as an oil and gas exploration company and entered the inland shipping industry in 1969 with the acquisition of Dixie Carriers.

Kirby Corporation operates the largest fleet of tank barges in the United States. The company also offers a diesel engine service, which contributes 22.5% to sales.

Over the past 20 years, Kirby Corporation has acquired numerous smaller competitors, including the inland shipping businesses of Ashland Petroleum , Dow Chemical , Union Carbide , ExxonMobil , Lyondell Chemical, and Seacor Holdings .
