Water pollution

Since 2010, Duke Energy in the US state of North Carolina has repeatedly violated water protection regulations in connection with the operation of its coal-fired power plants in Eden , Moncure, Asheville , Goldsboro and Mount Holly. Repeatedly, sludge contaminated with heavy metals such as arsenic , selenium , chromium and copper leaked from landfills for coal ash and slag .

For two years the company in Moncure failed to repair a leak in a drainage pipe that had been known since 2011. At Asheville, Duke Energy diverted sewage into the French Broad River . In February 2014, an incident occurred in a landfill on the Dan River . Contaminated mud contaminated the river for over 100 km. Duke Energy had failed to adequately monitor and maintain drainage pipes despite warnings from employees.

In May 2015, Duke Energy pleaded guilty to violating water pollution regulations in these three and six other cases. The company was fined a total of $ 102 million, the highest criminal fine ever imposed in the state of North Carolina.

Awards
