Products

The pharmaceutical products include iron supplements, a parasympatholytic and a transdermal testosterone preparation. Actavis also makes over a hundred other generic medicines .

Company history

The company was founded in 1984 by Allen Chao and David Hsia. In honor of his mother, whose maiden name was Hwa , Chao named the company Watson with a phonetic reference to Hwas son .

In 2012, the Luxembourg-Swiss competitor Actavis was taken over. Watson Pharmaceuticals was renamed Actavis.

In February 2014, Actavis announced that it would take over generic drug competitor Forest Laboratories for $ 28 billion. On July 1, 2014, Actavis completed the acquisition of Forest Laboratories.

In February 2015, the company acquired its US competitor Allergan, Inc. for 66 billion dollars and announced plans to change its name, subject to shareholder approval of Actavis Allergan. The name change took place on June 15, 2015.

In November 2015, Allergan and Pfizer announced their intention to merge. The new company was to be based in Dublin and initially named Allergan, but later renamed Pfizer. Technically, Allergan would have taken over the larger company Pfizer in order to avoid the higher US taxes. After the US government announced measures against tax evasion in April 2016, the companies ended takeover activities. Although the original agreements included a $ 400 million penalty in this case, it was agreed that Pfizer would pay Allergan $ 150 million.

On June 25, 2019, AbbVie announced that it intended to acquire Allergan. AbbVie valued Allergan in its offer at $ 63 billion. The acquisition was completed in June 2020.

Products

  • Allergan is the original manufacturer of Botox , a remedy for a number of neurological diseases (and as a Botox Cosmetic with an aesthetic indication) with worldwide sales of approximately 2.4 billion US dollars. The second largest product is Restasis , a ciclosporin- containing drug against corneal scars in dry eye syndrome . The more popular trade names (primarily Botox ) are the main reason why the name Allergan was chosen when they merged with Actavis.
  • Due to the various mergers, Allergan is also a manufacturer of numerous generics, but these are to be sold to Teva (world market leader in generics).
  • In cooperation with Amgen , Allergan also develops biosimilars , according to its own information on Herceptin , Avastin , Rituxan / MabThera and Erbitux .
