Actavis was a Luxembourg pharmaceutical company with headquarters in Luxembourg and operational headquarters in Steinhausen ZG in Switzerland and roots in Iceland , which specialized in generics . It was one of the largest generic pharmaceutical companies in the world, with annual sales in 2005 of around $ 2 billion. The company was globally active and privately owned. The head office was in Hafnarfjörður near Reykjavík (Iceland), but several important departments, e.g. B. Pharmacovigilance were based in Denmark . Björgólfur Thor Björgólfsson was the founder and chairman of the supervisory board . On June 23, 2010 Claudio Albrecht was appointed as the new CEO.

The “ Evidence-based Medicine Research Service ”, which the Actavis branches in Austria and Switzerland offered doctors free of charge after registration, was quite remarkable . Research was carried out by an Austrian university and the results were made available to the inquirer.

history

The predecessor company was founded in 1956 as Pharmaco . By the late 1990s, Actavis had fewer than 100 employees and only served the Icelandic market. In 1999 the Bulgarian competitor Balkanpharma was taken over. Since then, more than 25 companies have been bought.

Actavis was represented in 40 countries and its products were sold in 60 countries.

The main shareholder was the Icelandic billionaire Björgólfur Thor Björgólfsson, who held 80 percent of Actavis through his investment company Novator. As part of the Icelandic financial crisis in October 2008, he wanted to sell this stake.

In 2011, the generics group Actavis relocated its headquarters from Iceland to Steinhausen in the canton of Zug in Switzerland.

In 2012 Actavis was taken over by the US competitor Watson Pharmaceuticals for 4.5 billion euros, which then renamed itself Actavis .

In February 2015, the company acquired its US competitor Allergan, Inc. for 66 billion dollars and announced plans to change its name, subject to shareholder approval of Actavis Allergan. The name change took place on June 15, 2015.

Actavis Germany continued with its headquarters in Munich. Since the rights of use for the Actavis brand expired, the company has been called Puren Pharma GmbH & Co. KG since 2017 .
