Honeywell was founded on April 23, 1885 by Albert Butz , son of Swiss immigrants, as Butz Thermo-Electric Regulator Co. in Minneapolis and initially engaged in the manufacture of furnace control systems. It was the first to offer products for automatic indoor temperature control in buildings.

In 1912 the company built its first factory in Minneapolis and was henceforth called Minneapolis Heat Regulator Co. In 1924, Mark C. Honeywell, a pioneer of automation technology, developed the clock thermostat in his company Honeywell Heating Specialties Co.

In 1927, William R. Sweatt, the new owner of the Minneapolis Heat Regulator Co., and Mark C. Honeywell merged their two companies. The new company, called the Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company , was founded as a public company and in 1928 had sales of $ 5.25 million.

From 1963, the US Department of Defense began to build the computer-controlled defense system WIMEX, also known as the Worldwide Military Command and Control System (WWMCCS), whose network is based on Honeywell computers.

In 1970 Honeywell bought General Electric's computer division . This division was then sold to Bull in 1991 .

In 1984 Honeywell bought the company CENTRA-Bürkle GmbH & Co.

In 1989 Honeywell outsourced its weapons production to the Alliant Techsystems group, which was founded for this purpose . Alliant is now the largest producer of landmines and ammunition.

In 1999 Honeywell was bought by AlliedSignal , the company operating under the better known name Honeywell since this merger . This merger made Honeywell one of the largest companies in the world. In late 1999, Honeywell acquired Pittway Corp., making Notifier , a manufacturer of intelligent fire alarms, part of the Honeywell Life Safety Group.

In the years 2000–2002 there was repeated talk of a merger between the two giant corporations Honeywell and General Electric, which was ultimately rejected by the EU Commission, although it had previously been accepted in the USA. No other merger has caused as much buzz as this one. The merger of the two groups would have created the largest company in the world.

In 2005 Honeywell bought the British conglomerate Novar with its brands Esser, Ackermann and TREND for 2.4 billion US dollars. The German Novar locations in Neuss and Albstadt have remained in the Honeywell Group. Safety technology products are developed and produced here. The rest of the Novar group was resold.

At the beginning of 2006 Honeywell bought the British group First Technologies, which includes the companies City Tech, BW, MST and EnviteC-Wismar, which mainly work in the medical technology sector.

In October 2010 Honeywell took over 100% of Paul Hochköpper GmbH & Co. KG (Peha), a leading manufacturer of building system technology and electrical installation solutions, based in Lüdenscheid . The German company was incorporated into the "Automation and Control Solutions" division. Particularly interesting for Honeywell was obviously the know-how of Peha in the field of new technologies and innovative solutions for energy saving . The switch and socket production located in Werne was relocated to the Peha main plant in Lüdenscheid and to a plant in Asia. The plant in Werne was closed at the end of October 2011.

In 2015 Honeywell took over Sigma-Aldrich's European solvent and inorganic materials business from Merck due to antitrust regulations .

The takeover of the Elster Group was completed in January 2016 .

At the end of 2018, the Homes division was spun off under the name Resideo.

At the end of 2018, the Transportation division was spun off and operates under the name Garrett.

Honeywell is a classic conglomerate, consisting of three divisions, which are finally divided into different divisions. The three areas are:

Aerospace (aerospace)

Is one of the main suppliers of aircraft parts for Airbus and Boeing . The group also manufactures engines for business jets. In addition, NASA mostly purchases systems from Honeywell Aerospace.

Performance Materials and Technologies (specialty chemicals) / PMT

Deals with the production of chemicals and special films (especially for pharmaceuticals ). UOP licenses petrochemical plants.

Automation and Control Solutions (automation and control technology) / ACS

Development of home automation and air conditioning devices . The Honeywell Life Safety Group manufactures fire alarms.

In 1968 anti-war activists in Minneapolis, the Honeywell Project in order to Honeywell's production of the Vietnam War used cluster bombs to protest. Because of the demonstrations and information events, Honeywell was forced to start its own image campaign a little later. The Honeywell shareholders' meeting held in 1970 had to be canceled after 14 minutes due to approximately 3,000 demonstrators organized by the Honeywell Project inside and outside the building. A cessation of cluster bomb production could not be achieved. From 1981 Honeywell was again the target of protests against the production of the cluster bombs used in the bombing of Beirut by the Israeli army, as well as the production of LGM-118 Peacekeeper .

In 2009 it became known that Honeywell was spying on almost all of its employees' computers with the powerful EnCase Forensic monitoring software from Guidance Software .

Since the takeover of Alliedsignal, Honeywell has appeared repeatedly in the press due to staff cuts at various locations.
