Raytheon Company was an American defense and electronics company based in Waltham, Massachusetts . The company merged with Hughes Aircraft in 1997 , named after its founder, Howard Hughes . In 2020 it was merged into Raytheon Technologies .

history

Laurence K. Marshall and Vannevar Bush , two former roommates at the college, founded what is now Raytheon Company as the American Appliance Company in Cambridge , MA in 1922 together with the scientist Charles G. Smith .

The first commercial success was a gas-filled rectifier , which made it possible to operate radio sets with alternating current from the socket , instead of the expensive and heavy batteries of the time . It was sold under the brand name Raytheon , which is made up of "ray" (English for "ray") and "theon" (Greek for "from the gods" or "divine"). As a result of a name dispute, the name of the entire company was changed to Raytheon in 1925.

Raytheon developed the world's first microwave oven in 1947 . Together with the household appliance manufacturer Tappan Stove Company , a solution for domestic use was worked on from 1952 and brought onto the market in 1955. By 1964, the RL-1 had been sold 1,396 times. A model stands in the National Museum of American History today . In 1965, Raytheon took over the American home appliance manufacturer Amana in order to market its own microwaves under the model name Radarrange from 1967 . In 1997 the household appliance division was sold to the air conditioning manufacturer Goodman Manufacturing.

In 1948 the first commercial transistor , the CK703 point contact transistor, was presented . One of the first fully transistorized transistor radios , the 8TP , which went down in radio history as the first "serious" transistor radio, was developed by Raytheon. On February 8, 1980, the Beech Aircraft Corporation was bought (founded in 1932 by Walter H. and Olive Ann Beech). 1995 the purchase of the HAARP contract from the armaments company E-Systems followed. In 1995 Raytheon took over the company Anschütz & Co GmbH in Kiel (name until the end of 2005: Raytheon Marine; since January 1, 2006 Raytheon-Anschütz). 1997 saw the acquisition of the military technology division of Texas Instruments and the acquisition of Hughes Electronics ( Hughes Aircraft ). In 2007, Sarcos Robotics was acquired.

On June 9, 2019, Raytheon and United Technologies announced plans to merge. The share swap merger was completed in the first half of 2020.

In its various areas and subsidiaries, the group mainly produced military equipment with complex controls, e.g. B. the air defense system Patriot and other missiles like the AIM-9 Sidewinder , torpedoes and cruise missiles . In addition, Raytheon manufactures radar systems for almost every combat aircraft of the US Air Force , including the advanced active electronically scanned array .

Raytheon was not only considered the company that invented the microwave oven , but is also a pioneer in the development of microwave weapons and offers working systems for the military with the Active Denial System .

After Raytheon bought the robotics specialist Sarcos, the development of an exoskeleton began . The development in this area has meanwhile advanced so far that there are at least prototypes ready for series production. The project name is "Sarcos XOS 2" .

Raytheon was particularly active in the European market as a globally operating service provider who advises and supports internationally active companies in so-called training outsourcing . The range of services includes the analysis of appropriate measures, the conception of alternative solutions, the design, implementation and management of training media and measures ( blended learning , IBT, WBT, VCT) through to the evaluation of the methods used on behalf of the customer.
