Raytheon Anschütz GmbH is a subsidiary of the Raytheon Company (USA). The company was founded in 1905 as Anschütz & Co. after Hermann Anschütz-Kaempfe had invented the gyrocompass . Today, Raytheon Anschütz develops, produces and tests instruments for navigation as well as monitoring and control systems for merchant ships , warships and mega yachts at the Kiel location .

history

At the beginning of the 20th century, course instruments for shipping were inadequately accurate, especially near the poles , there were incorrect displays. Following an expedition to the North Pole, Hermann Anschütz-Kaempfe developed a new, more reliable compass. He concentrated on gyro technology and in 1904 presented the first gyro compass that could be used on board.

In 1905 the company Anschütz & Co. was founded in Kiel and the mass production of gyro compasses started. A number of other navigation and control systems later found their roots at Anschütz in Kiel; for example the first chart plotter , a predecessor of today's electronic sea charts , or the first autopilot for ships, the so-called iron helmsman .

In 1995, Anschütz was taken over by the Raytheon Company (USA), a defense and marine solutions company . Anschütz & Co. was renamed Raytheon Anschütz GmbH.
