The Tappan Stove Company was an American household appliance manufacturer from Mansfield , Ohio , best known for its electric ovens and the first microwave oven for private households.
history
The Tappan Stove Company was founded in 1881 by WJ Tappan in Bellaire (Ohio) as the Ohio Valley Company to manufacture cast iron stoves. After a fire destroyed the production facility, WJ Tappan moved his company to Mansfield, Ohio , in 1889 , and renamed it the Eclipse Stove Company . In 1920 the company began to market its ovens nationwide. A legal dispute arose with a supplier of the same name from Illinois in the course of which Tappan renamed his company the Tappan Stove Company in January 1922 . In the 1940s, WJ retired from the company and left the company to his son, Alan P. Tappan. His son, W. Richard "Dick" Tappan, managed the company from 1958 to 1980.
In 1950, Tappan acquired the Los Angeles- based O'Keefe & Merritt Stove Company and used the name primarily on the west coast of the United States until the late 1980s .
In 1979 the Swedish company Electrolux took over the Tappan Stove Company. Seven years later, Electrolux acquired White Consolidated Industries and with it the American manufacturers Frigidaire , White-Westinghouse , Gibson and Kelvinator . With the incorporation of Tappans, the name was initially changed to WCI Major Appliances Group and renamed the Frigidaire Company in 1991. In the summer of 1992, production in Mansfield ended with 200 employees. The Frigidaire Company , headquartered in Dublin, Ohio , initially continued to market ovens under the brand name Tappan. In 1998, the air conditioning manufacturer Nortek acquired the naming rights to the brand to sell stoves, air conditioning systems and heat pumps . The brand name is currently not used.
Products
During the world wars, the company supplied the US armed forces with its own patented field cooker .
In 1944, Tappan manufactured the first oven with a glass insert in the door to see through.
In cooperation with Raytheon , Tappan developed the first microwave oven for home use in 1955 with dimensions suitable for living rooms. By 1964, the RL-1 had been sold 1,396 times. A model stands in the National Museum of American History today .
