Frigidaire was an American manufacturer of household appliances. Today the brand is part of the Swedish Electrolux group.

history

The company was founded in Fort Wayne , Indiana in 1916 as the Guardian Frigerator Company to manufacture electrically operated refrigerators .

In 1918 General Motors acquired the company and renamed it Frigidaire in 1919. Production was relocated to Detroit and production techniques of automobile production were used. In 1921 production was relocated to Dayton, Ohio . After the capacities there were no longer sufficient , a larger new production facility was completed in Moraine , Ohio, in 1926 . In 1929, the one millionth Frigidaire refrigerator was completed. Despite the global economic crisis, Frigidaire increased production and sales with new products such as electric dehumidifiers and entered the railway air-conditioning sector . In 1937 the company expanded its product range to include electric cookers .

After the war, Frigidaire expanded its line of appliances to include washing machines , dishwashers , food waste disposers, ice machines and car air conditioning systems. In 1956 Frigidaire produced its 20 millionth refrigerator. However, due to the high production costs, Frigidaire's household appliances were no longer competitive. Sales stalled and eventually several thousand workers were laid off in 1971. Due to the growing business with car air conditioning systems, GM separated this department from Frigidaire in 1975 and outsourced the production branch to the newly founded ACDelco .

In 1979 General Motors announced the sale of the trademarks to White Consolidated Industries , which already owned the trademarks to Kelvinator and the Gibson Refrigator Company . The Dayton manufacturing facilities remained owned by GM and were converted to produce automobiles. In 1986 Electrolux took over WCI and with it the Frigidaire brand. The brand name is currently used for sales in North America , Russia , Tahiti , Hong Kong and parts of Africa and the Middle East . Nortek holds the trademark rights for the heating and air conditioning product areas .

Sales and production in Germany

A German sales company was founded in Berlin as early as 1927. 1930 started the own production of evaporators and compressors in Berlin. From 1938 onwards, the production of the complete cooling units was relocated to Rüsselsheim . In 1949, Frigidaire was incorporated into Adam Opel AG (also a GM subsidiary) as a subsidiary and the brand name Opel, established in Germany, was also used for the refrigerators. Depending on the period of manufacture, the devices bear the name Frigidaire with the addition of Adam Opel AG product or, in addition to the Frigidaire lettering, the white / yellow Opel logo introduced in 1950 with a connected Frigidaire crown. 1959 the production of household refrigerators in Germany is stopped.
