Amana is an American home appliance manufacturer based in Benton Harbor , Michigan .

history

The company was founded in 1934 by George Christian Foerstner as Amana Refrigeration Inc. in Middle Amana (Iowa) to manufacture commercial refrigerators .

In 1936 Foerstner sold his company to the regional business enterprise The Amana Society , but remained in the company's management. In 1947 the first refrigerator for private household use was manufactured. The company advertised, unusual for the time, in advertisements with celebrities such as Bob Hope , Dorothy Lamour , Groucho Marx , Gary Cooper and Phil Silvers . In 1950 Foerstner bought the company back with some investors .

In 1965, the American arms company Raytheon took over the company in order to start marketing the microwave that it had invented under the model name Radarrange from 1967 . In 1997, Raytheon sold Amana to air conditioning manufacturer Goodman Manufacturing for $ 750 million . In 2001 the Maytag Corporation of Iowa bought the company, excluding air conditioning manufacturing, for $ 325 million.

With the takeover of Maytag by Whirlpool Corporation in 2005, ownership changed again.
