Maytag was an American manufacturer of home appliances from Newton, Iowa . Today the brand name Maytag belongs to the Whirlpool Corporation .

history

Maytag Corporation was founded in 1893 by businessman Frederick Louis Maytag, his two brothers-in-law WC Bergmann, AH Bergman and engineer George W. Parson as the Parsons Band-Cutter & Self Feeder Company for the manufacture of threshing machines in Newton, Iowa . After the turn of the century, Maytag took over sole management of the company, renamed it Maytag Washing Machine Company , and began manufacturing washing machines in 1905 . LB Maytag, son of the company founder, headed the company from 1920. In 1925 it was renamed Maytag Company . In 1926, LB handed the management over to his brother Elmer Henry Maytag.

Between 1934 and 1941 presented Maytag with the Toy Racer is a game Car forth. In 1940 Frederick Louis Maytag II took over the management. In the 1950s Maytag expanded its range to include washing machines and tumble dryers for commercial use, refrigerators and ovens. With the death of Fred Maytag II in 1962, the last family member in the company's management died. By the late 1970s, the company had 18,000 employees worldwide.

Expansion began in 1981 with the purchase of the Hardwick Stove Company , the extractor hood manufacturer Jenn-Air Corporation and in 1986 the American oven manufacturer Magic Chef . In 1989 Maytag acquired the Chicago Pacific Corporation for US $ 1 billion and thus, along with some kitchen furniture manufacturers, the home appliance manufacturer Hoover . The furniture manufacturers were sold in the same year, and Maytag wanted to expand to Europe with Hoover . In 1997, Maytag Corporation acquired GS Blodgett Corporation, a manufacturer of pizza ovens. In 2001, the company acquired Amana Corporation and its manufacturing facilities for $ 325 million.

As a result, Maytag came under increasing cost pressure. In 2005, the company was sentenced in the United States to pay a total of $ 33.5 million in a class action lawsuit over quality problems with the Neptune washing machine. In 2007, 250,000 Neptune washing machines were also recalled nationwide due to the risk of fire.

In 2005, the Chinese manufacturer Haier tried to acquire the company for 1.28 billion US dollars, and in 2006 Whirlpool succeeded in taking over for 1.7 billion. The head office was to Whirlpool headquarters in Benton Harbor ( Michigan moved). The development and manufacturing facilities in Newton, Iowa , Herrin, Illinois, and Searcy, Arkansas were closed.

Nortek holds the trademark rights for the heating and air conditioning product areas .

Advertising presence

A special feature is the advertising figure of the lonely mechanic , which Maytag has been using since 1967. He waits in vain for customers in his shop, as the Maytag devices do not break. The advertising figure is as well known in the USA as Captain Iglo , Klementine or Tante Tilly in this country and has been embodied almost unchanged for 46 years by various well-known actors. Only after the technical problems of their devices did the figure become implausible. Even so, Maytag stuck to the popular character and gave her a fresh look and a new image .
