Jesse White (* 3. January 1917 in Buffalo , New York as Jesse Marc Weidenfeld ; † 9. January 1997 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor.

Life

Jesse White was born in Buffalo near New York in 1917, but grew up in Akron , Ohio . There he appeared as an amateur in local theaters at the age of 15. After initially working as a salesman, White switched to acting as his main occupation in the late 1930s. He first performed in various locations in the United States before making his Broadway debut in 1942 in The Moon went under . White's breakthrough was the role of the gruff sanatorium keeper Wilson in the hit play My Friend Harvey . He represented the role of Marvin Wilson in the film adaptation from 1950 and another television adaptation from 1972, each on the side of James Stewart . As early as the late 1940s, White appeared regularly alongside his film work on television, for example in the thriller Böse Saat about a murderous child and in the comedy Why did I say yes? with Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck . In total he played in almost 60 films by 1993, mostly in supporting roles as an average guy or worker.

From the 1950s he also took on numerous guest roles on television, so White had recurring roles in the television series Make Room for Daddy and The Ann Sothern Show . He later appeared in other television series such as Perry Mason , Hart but cordially , MacGyver and Seinfeld . From the late 1960s onwards, White had success with a different role: for the household appliance manufacturer Maytag Corporation , he played the role of Maytag repairer in advertisements , who has nothing to do because Maytag products are simply unbreakable. For over 20 years he embodied the repairman who became one of America's most popular advertising figures. For a few days of shooting a year, White received several hundred thousand US dollars on Maytag . White had his last role in 1996 in a guest appearance in Seinfeld . He died of a heart attack on January 9, 1997, six days after his 80th birthday. White was married to Celia Cohn from 1942 until his death in 1997, they had two children.
