Iglo (spelling: iglo) is a German company with headquarters in Hamburg , which was founded on July 1, 2006 as part of the separation from Unilever . Iglo is a company that is part of the British Iglo Group, which in turn is part of Nomad Foods . Significant operative units of the holding are in Hamburg (approx. 90 employees) and Reken (approx. 530 employees) as well as in Bremerhaven with Frozen Fish International GmbH (FFI) ( fish processing , 840 employees).

history

From 1939 to 1961, the frozen food manufacturer operated under the name Solo Feinfrost with 18 production sites, including in Emden and Wunstorf. In 1959 the first frozen fish fingers were produced.

In 1960 the name "Iglo" was first used in the Netherlands for the marketing of frozen foods such as fish fingers and spinach , Iglo being the Dutch name for igloo . In 1961 Unilever decided to use the name Iglo in Germany instead of the English name of its sister company "Birds Eye". This was followed by the change of name to Iglo Feinfrost and the production and sale of frozen spinach in Germany began.

Langnese-Iglo GmbH was created in 1963 from a merger of the two Unilever companies Langnese Eiskrem GmbH (with Unilever since 1936 ) and Iglo GmbH. On January 1, 1970, the company took over Findus-Jopa GmbH, based in Frankfurt am Main, from the Nestlé Group and took over the production of frozen food and ice cream in Reken . 1980 followed the introduction of the frozen pizza brand "Crossa".

In August 2005 Langnese-Iglo GmbH became part of Unilever Deutschland GmbH and no longer functioned as an independent company.

After 45 years, on February 9, 2006, Unilever announced the sale of its European frozen food brands “Iglo” and “Birds Eye”. The reasons given were the increasing competition from cheap products and insufficient profit and growth prospects. The “Findus” brand, which is strong there, was retained in Italy . Therefore, on July 1, 2006, the frozen food division was spun off into the newly founded Iglo GmbH. Iglo and Birds Eye were sold on August 28, 2006 for 1.73 billion euros to the private equity company Permira . In 2010 iglo GmbH was included in the consolidated financial statements of "BEIG Topco Limited - Birds Eye" based in Feltham , Great Britain. The “Birds Eye Iglo” group has been operating under the name “Iglo Foods Group Limited” since mid-2011.

In April 2015 Iglo was sold to the American investor group Nomad Foods Limited for 2.6 billion euros. Nomad plans to grow the company into a food company.

External appearance

In 1985, the advertising character “Käpt'n Iglo” was introduced in Germany . This is based on the character "Captain Birds Eye" invented in 1966 by the advertising agency Lintas. Since then the "Käpt'n Iglo" has been cast with various actors, including from 2008 to 2010 the actor Gerd Deutschmann .

The Iglo logo with the three-pronged fork was replaced in 2004. The new Iglo logo is described as follows:

"In the new iglo logo, the warm, red color scheme and the natural, leaf-like shape with the shining sun are now combined to form a strong symbol that more than meets the needs of a major food brand that sets trends and standards."

This new logo is also used for the other brand names “Birds Eye” and “Findus”.

Standards

Some of the Iglo products have the MSC certificate for sustainability, for example the Käpt'n-Iglo fish fingers . The group temporarily cooperated with the WWF and made donations for sustainable fishing. According to its own information from 2010, Iglo obtained around 40% of its raw material from MSC-certified fishing. In May 2019, Iglo announced that it was leaving the manufacturer association BLL on the grounds that it refused to recommend the Nutri-Score (“traffic light”) labeling system , which originated in France and is considered to be progressive, for printing on food packaging.

Products

Iglo produces a wide range of frozen food products that are sold under the Iglo umbrella brand . Some well-known brands are Käpt'n-Iglo-Fischstablchen , Heiße Hexe and Schlemmerfilet à la Bordelaise (although the latter was not allowed to be registered as a trademark and is therefore not protected). The Bistro brand (including frozen baguettes) was also part of the Iglo range until 2003 .

In January 2020 Iglo launched various meat substitute products and meat substitute dishes under the new Green Cuisine brand .
