In May 1980 Bistro was introduced as a sub-brand of the frozen food brand Iglo, which at the time belonged to the British-Dutch group Unilever . In the 1990s, the baguette range expanded to include tomato cheese, spinach feta, Parisienne (cheese), tomato pesto, Vegetable (vegetables), pizza, garlic and herbs as well as gourmet baguettes in Provence, Brittany and Hawaii , Four cheeses, carbonara and chicken barbecue expanded. In 1992 Iglo tried to enter the frozen pizza market with Bistro Pizza Crossa . Varieties such as ham, salami, 4 seasons, spinach leaves, Bolognese or Classica were offered, but they could not hold their own in the long run. Cheeseburgers and tarte flambée were introduced in the late 1990s, and microwave express dishes were introduced in the early 2000s.

In 2000 Iglo stopped the production of frozen pizzas, in favor of bread snacks such as Bistro Ciabattino since 1997, and Bistro Crustino from 2000 in the flavors tomato-mozzarella, bacon-onion and spring vegetables. In 2004 baguettes were one of the best-selling frozen snacks products, accounting for 63% of sales.

In October 2003, Unilever established the Knorr food brand for frozen foods. In this context, the pizza, snacks, baguettes and frozen ready meals divisions were brought together under the Knorr brand and the Iglo brand - which until then had been a sub-brand of Bistro - was replaced by Knorr.

In 2005, Dr. Oetker finally took over the Unilever pizza and baguette business. In addition to the baguettes, Dr. Oetker also sells tarte flambée specialties under the Bistro sub-brand.

In May 2008 a new packaging layout was designed for the baguettes. Since a packaging relaunch in January 2016, a red awning has been introduced as a uniform look.
