history

Haier was founded as Qingdao Refrigerator Co. in 1984 in Qingdao , China . In the early years the company had a cooperation with Liebherr-Hausgeräte . The logo comes from the time of the cooperation and was intended to illustrate the common growth with an Asian boy and a European boy. In 1991 the name was changed to “Qingdao Haier” and in 1992 to “Haier” or “Haier Group”. The company has been operating under the name Haier Smart Home since June 2019 .

The planned takeover of the US home appliance manufacturer Maytag Corporation in 2005 failed because of concerns on the part of the Chinese, whereupon the Haier competitor Whirlpool paid 2 billion euros for Maytag. In 2006, more than 50,000 people worked for Haier worldwide and had sales of $ 16 billion. In 2011, sales rose to 151 billion yuan ($ 24.2 billion) with 70,000 employees. Also in 2011, Haier took over the household appliances division from Sanyo . In November 2012, Haier bought around 70% of the New Zealand Fisher & Paykel group for $ 760 million , after Haier owned around 20% before that.

In January 2016, Haier announced the takeover of the home appliance division GE Appliance from the American conglomerate General Electric . The purchase price is $ 5.4 billion. The takeover will be handled by the listed company Qingdao Haier, which is 41% owned by the Haier Group. In October 2018, Haier acquired the Italian household appliance manufacturer Candy , which is particularly known for its washing machines and has good market positions in southern Europe, Turkey and Russia, for EUR 475 million .

The group has been represented in the DA-CH region since 2006 by Haier Deutschland GmbH , based in Bad Homburg . A research and development center is operated in Nuremberg .
