Leslie Townes "Bob" Hope (born May 29, 1903 in Eltham , United Kingdom , † July 27, 2003 in Toluca Lake , California ) was an American comedian , actor and entertainer .

biography

Hope was born the fifth of seven sons to William Henry Hope and his wife Avis Townes. The family moved to Cleveland , Ohio in 1907 . In 1920, Bob Hope became a US citizen.

Before he became an actor , he was a professional boxer under the pseudonym Packey East . He became known by several Broadway - musicals , and with appearances in radio and television and in films . Between 1941 and 1991 he played (with Jack Lemaire, among others ) during the wars with American participation in front of US soldiers and became one of the most popular troop supervisors .

His favorite hobby was playing golf . He may be the only person who has played a game with all US presidents from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George Bush . In 1983 Hope was even inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame for his services to golf . He was also the recipient of the Medal for Merit , one of the highest honors in the United States.

In the Guinness Book of Records Hope is listed because of its more than 1,500 awards as "most honored entertainer". Among them are five Oscars , which, however, were not given to him because of his acting achievements, but all of them on an honorary basis. He is represented on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with four stars - in the categories of film, television, radio and theater.

With his wife Dolores , who was also over 100 years old, he was married for 69 years from February 19, 1934 until his death. With her he had four adopted children (two sons and two daughters). Hope died at the age of 100 years at a pneumonia . His grave is in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in the San Fernando Valley , Los Angeles County .

Honors

A US Navy cargo ship has been named in honor of the entertainer since 1998 . From December 2003 was the airport of Burbank north named Los Angeles also after him; however, this was reversed in May 2016.

The asteroid of the main outer belt (2829) Bobhope is named after him.
