The Hollywood Burbank Airport ( IATA : BUR , ICAO : KBUR , and Burbank Airport ) is a regional airport in Burbank in Greater Los Angeles . In 2017 it was used by around 4.7 million travelers, making it one of the larger of its kind.
Location and transport links
The airport is about 3 miles west of downtown Burbank and about 12 miles north of downtown Los Angeles .
The airport can be reached by car via Exit 139 of Interstate 5 . There are also several bus connections, including direct to Hollywood . It also has its own train station, through which Amtrak and Metrolink offer several regional and long-distance services, including Pacific Surfliner trains and on the Los Angeles to Seattle route .
history
The airport was opened under the name United Airport in 1930 and has been renamed many times throughout history. From 1934 it was called Union Air Terminal , from 1940 Lockheed Air Terminal , from 1967 Hollywood-Burbank Airport , from 1978 Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport , before it was named after the famous entertainer and actor Bob Hope in 2003 . In 2016 it was finally given its current name Hollywood Burbank Airport.
The name Lockheed Air Terminal reveals that the airport was operated at the time of the Second World War by the aircraft and armaments company Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin ) to manufacture aircraft that were essential for the war effort.
After the war, the larger airlines migrated to today's Los Angeles International Airport , which is why Hollywood Burbank Airport is only important as a regional airport today.
In a vote in November 2016, the majority of Burbank's citizens voted in favor of building a new passenger terminal . This is to be built north of the previous terminal on the eastern side of runway 15/33.
Terminal building
Hollywood Burbank Airport has two terminals A and B , which are connected by a central building. It has 14 gates ( A1-A9 and B1-B5 ) that have not yet been equipped with passenger boarding bridges .
Airlines and Destinations
Several major airlines, including American Airlines and Southwest Airlines , operate primarily from Burbank to major US destinations. For example, New York , Seattle , Dallas and Denver are served . The nearest major airport is Los Angeles International Airport, about 30 km south .
