The Moffett Federal Airfield ( IATA : NUQ , ICAO : KNUQ , FAA LID: NUQ ), or Moffett Field for short , is a civil airfield between the Californian cities of Mountain View and Sunnyvale , which is operated by Google LLC . Google has a place in November 2014 by the owner, the Ames Research Center of NASA , rented for 60 years.
history
The airfield emerged from a facility of the United States Navy , the Naval Air Station Sunnyvale . It was named shortly after his death after William A. Moffett , who died in the crash of the airship USS Akron (ZRS-4) in 1933.
The successor ship to the USS Akron, the USS Macon (ZRS-5) was also temporarily stationed at Moffett Field.
During the Second World War, among other things, naval airship units were stationed at the airfield, which patrolled along the coast from there and looked for enemy submarines. The Moffett Field was one of the main bases.
present

Hangars One , Two, and Three are collectively designated as a National Historic Zone and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places . Hangar One is one of the largest self-supporting structures.
