Airport layout

The San Francisco International Airport ( IATA : SFO , ICAO : KSFO ) is the international passenger airport of the Californian metropolis San Francisco . The airport, operated by the San Francisco Airports Commission , is the seventh largest airport in the USA with 57,793,313 passengers in 2018 and the second largest on the west coast after Los Angeles International Airport . In a global comparison , it ranks 25th in 2018. SFO serves as a hub for Alaska Airlines and United Airlines .

Location and transport links

The airport is located 13 miles south of downtown San Francisco in a raised area of the San Francisco Bay .

  • Car : US Highway 101 passes directly at the airport .
  • Rail : Since June 22, 2003, the BART rapid transit railway has been extended to the international terminal. This makes it possible to reach downtown San Francisco and various places (for example Oakland ) on the east coast of the Bay without changing trains. Trains stop at the nearby station Millbrae where a transfer possibility to the Caltrain - local trains to San Jose and to San Francisco is. SamTrans buses open up the rest of the peninsula .

The automatic people mover AirTrain has been around since 2003 . The red line serves a roundabout between the new BART station and all terminals, while the blue line extends a little further and the closer terminal parking spaces and the Car Rental Center, i.e. H. drives to the branches of the car rental company . It is criticized that the huge long-term parking spaces further out are not approached.

Terminal building

The San Francisco International Airport has four terminals with a total of eight areas ( A to G ) arranged in a ring . The letters begin in the southwest south of the access roads with A and are arranged counterclockwise across south ( B ), southeast ( C ), northeast ( D and E ) to northwest ( F and G ). The terminal numbering starts with B with 1 and ends with F with 3. Although areas G and A together form the fourth terminal, they are not referred to as Terminal 4 in the plan , but as “International Terminal” or “Main Hall”. Terminals 1 to 3 are combined into "Domestic" and have the "Domestic Garage" inside the ring. The "International Garage" is located to the right and left of the access roads west of the "International Terminal":

Terminal 1

The former South terminal (dt. South terminal ) said building consists of the sections B and C .

Terminal 2

The 1954 opened former Central Terminal (dt. Central Terminal ) with the region D was closed in 2000 and served temporarily as an office and link building. The terminal was extensively modernized and expanded by April 2011 and has since served as a handling building with a total of 14 gates shared by American Airlines and Virgin America . Although it was originally called Central , it is not in the middle of the ring, but in the east opposite the access roads. In 2014, indoo.rs, in cooperation with The Lighthouse, installed around 500 Bluetooth beacons in Terminal 2 for better orientation for the blind and visually impaired. This is intended to facilitate the navigation of visitors in the terminal using the voice output in an app.

Terminal 3

This building was formerly the North Terminal (dt. North Terminal called) and consists of the areas E and F . It is mainly used by United Airlines .

The International Terminal

International Terminal

The international terminal, opened in 2000, replaced the former Central Terminal as a handling building and consists of areas A and G , which complete the terminal ring. This is where most of the airlines are airline alliances Star Alliance , SkyTeam and oneworld handled, including the flights of Lufthansa . Six of the passenger boarding bridges at this terminal, which for reasons of space spans the access routes to the other terminals and also complements the “ring”, are designed for the Airbus A380 .

Airlines and Destinations

A Boeing 747 on approach for landing

San Francisco International Airport is served by a total of 53 airlines . The largest local airlines are United Airlines with a market share of 45 percent and Alaska Airlines with a market share of 13 percent. Both airlines use the airport as a hub . In addition, Delta Air Lines with eight percent, American Airlines with eight percent and Southwest Airlines with seven percent have larger market shares in the number of passengers. Until the takeover by Alaska Air Lines, San Francisco International Airport served as the home airport of the airline Virgin America .

San Francisco is one of the most important national and international destinations on the west coast of the USA and is connected to numerous metropolises, including New York , Chicago , Tokyo , London and Dubai . From the German-speaking area, Lufthansa flies to San Francisco from Frankfurt am Main (since May 2011 with the Airbus A380 ) and Munich (seasonally also with the Airbus A380) and Swiss from Zurich . United Airlines also flies to Frankfurt am Main and Munich.
