The Victoria International Airport ( IATA code : YYJ , ICAO code : CYYJ ), English Victoria International Airport is an international commercial airport near Victoria , capital of British Columbia . He is particularly served by regional airlines since the comparatively short take-off and landing runways no widebody permit.

In 2009, 1,532,889 passengers were handled and there were a total of 166,615 flight movements. In the years that followed, the international trend prevailed here as well, which fell due to the overall economic situation. In 2011, 141,465 aircraft movements carried 1,499,792 passengers. In 2018, 121,152 aircraft movements carried 2,048,627 passengers. This makes it the third largest airport in British Columbia after Vancouver International Airport and Kelowna International Airport .

The Victoria Airport Water Aerodrome ( IATA code : -, ICAO code : -, Transport Canada Identifier: CAP5) is directly adjacent to the north-west of the airport .

The British Columbia Aviation Museum is also located at the airport .

history

In 1914 the airport started operating for military purposes. At that point there was only one grass runway. Since the airport is close to the water, it was then advantageous to handle flying boats . In 1948, the Department of Transport took over the entire site, which they named Victoria (Patricia Bay) Airport . The Canadian airline Trans Canada Airlines began flight operations a short time later. Today this company is called Air Canada .

In 1952 the last machine of the Royal Canadian Air Force withdrew. From 1959 the airport was officially renamed Victoria International Airport . He still bears this name today.

The last change of company followed in 1997. Transport Canada (formerly Department of Transport), took over the airport and expanded it. A completely new arrival area was built, which was connected to the terminal, which was also redesigned. In 2005 this work was completed.
