history

Few homesteads existed in the area of what is now the airport in the late 1930s when the Canadian government had plans for an air base. However, it was not until the Second World War that there was a threat of a Japanese attack that prompted the construction of a military airport. In 1941 a squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force was stationed in Tofino . The airport remained in operation as a military base until the 1950s. Then it was operated as a civil airport.
Before the establishment of an airport, access to this part of the west coast of Vancouver Island was restricted to boat traffic, as Highway 4 to Port Alberni was n't opened until 1959 either.
