Tofino is a place on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia , Canada , in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District .
Tofino was named after the Spanish cartographer, mathematician and naval officer Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel (1732–1795). The place lies on the edge of the Esowista Peninsula and belongs to the area of the Clayoquot Sound . Tofino and the nearby Ucluelet are the closest locations to the Pacific Rim National Park .
history
The first proven contact between the resident First Nation of the Hesquiaht tribe and Europeans took place during an expedition by the Spanish captain Juan José Pérez Hernández (also known as Juan Pérez) in 1774.
This first contact was followed by the next contact between the local First Nation and Europeans in 1778, the English explorer James Cook on his third South Sea voyage along the coast of Vancouver Island.
During the expedition in 1792 by the Spanish naval officers Dionisio Alcalá-Galiano and Antonio Valdéz y Fernández Bazán to explore the island, the name Tofino was first used in the reports and maps. Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel was the cartographer of the expedition.
The current community of Tofino developed around 1890. Before that, a nearby settlement on Stubbs Island was the main settlement of European fur hunters and fur traders in the region. From 1909, more and more European settlers and farmers, mainly of Norwegian, English and Scottish descent, moved into the emerging community. From around 1900 Morpheus Island was used as a cemetery , in continuation of the customs of the First Nations . On February 1, 1909, the community received a post office.
The award of local self-government for the municipality took place on February 5, 1932 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ).
Demographics
The 2011 census revealed a population of 1,876 residents for the district municipality. The population of the settlement increased by 13.4% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the province of British Columbia increased by 7.0%.
The population increases tenfold in summer and there have been repeated bottlenecks in the drinking water supply in recent years. The scarcity of drinking water in the summer of 2006 led to drastic restrictions for tourists, which led to plans to convert the drinking water supply.
traffic
Tofino has been linked to the east coast of the island by a road link, Highway 4 , via Parksville to Nanaimo since 1959 . Regular buses from Nanaimo and Victoria , the capital of British Columbia, run to Tofino regularly and also supply the town with mail and daily newspapers. The mainland, the area around Vancouver , can be reached by ferries via Nanaimo, and the area around Seattle with ferries via Victoria.
Tofino / Long Beach Airport is located about 11 kilometers southeast of the community . The municipality's seaplane base is located in the port of Tofino, protected by the offshore islands.
economy
The median income of the residents was C $ 22,696 in 2005, well below the average income of the entire province of British Columbia of C $ 24,867.
The economic focus arises from tourism and the associated fluctuations.
tourism
In summer, Tofino becomes a magnet for surfers , hikers, campers and whale watchers . Bear-watching and tours to Hot Spring Cove are also offered.
Worth mentioning for whale watchers is the annual Whale Festival in early March. This festival celebrates the arrival of the gray whales, which stop in Tofino on their way from Mexico to Alaska. This festival marks the start of the whale watching season in Tofino as some of the gray whales stay in Tofino all year round. Tofino is one of the best places for whale watching as the whale season runs from mid-February to late November. This makes the season one of the longest on Vancouver Island.
