Intersection of Highways 4 and 19

The British Columbia Highway 4 is located on Vancouver Iceland and is km with a length of 162, the only east-west route across the island. It starts at Qualicum Beach , at a turn off Highway 19A , and ends in Tofino on the Pacific coast . The highway is between the junction with Highway 19 and Port Alberni (junction "River Road"), as a so-called feeder route (feeder or connecting route), part of the Canadian National Highway System .

Sections

Alberni Highway

The section between Qualicum Beach and Port Alberni is called the Alberni Highway. The highway begins on Highway 19A, right on the coast to the Strait of Georgia , which separates Vancouver Island from mainland Canada . From there head south to the intersection with Highway 19 . The road now turns to the west. The highway leads through the mountains on Vancouver Island, past Cameron Lake and two provincial parks to Port Alberni.

Pacific Rim Highway

The stretch from Port Alberni to the Pacific coast is called the Pacific Rim Highway . The road leads west past Sproat Lake and then changes its course in a south-westerly direction. Kennedy Lake is still touched until the highway meets the Pacific Rim National Park just before the Pacific coast . When you reach the coast, a short spur road branches off to the south to Ucluelet . The highway runs northwest along the Pacific coast and cuts lengthways through the Pacific Rim National Park. In the middle of the park, just before the end of the highway, is Tofino / Long Beach Airport . The end of the highway is then in Tofino, on the Esowista peninsula.
Since the west coast of Canada because of the interplay of the North American plate , the Juan de Fuca Plate and the Pacific Plate is a geologically active area, you have to at appropriate earthquake with tsunami expected. Therefore evacuation routes are signposted along the highway.

Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park

The Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park is a small park on the Little Qualicum River. A campsite offers the possibility to stay overnight, the park is known for its waterfalls.

MacMillan Provincial Park

The MacMillan Provincial Park is also known under the name "Cathedral Grove." The park is visited because of the jungle of tourists, the old part of several hundred years Douglas is.

Sproat Lake Provincial Park

The Sproat Lake Provincial Park is a small park at Sproat Lake. Here, too, a campsite offers the possibility of staying overnight. This park is known for its petroglyphs and the Martin Mars type water bombers that were once stationed here .

Pacific Rim National Park

The park consists of three parts: The Broken Group Islands , which is made up of hundreds of small islands; the coastal region, Long Beach , which consists of a kilometer-long sandy beach and the West Coast Trail , one of the most famous hiking routes on Vancouver Island. The coastal forest, which is one of the last temperate rainforests on earth, is directly adjacent to the beach .

Tofino

Tofino is a popular destination among tourists. The place is known for its whale watching opportunities, especially the Pacific Rim Whale Festival in early March is popular. Furthermore, the place is used as a place to stay for the surfing paradise on Long Beach .
