The British Columbia Highway 17 has its beginning in Victoria on Vancouver Iceland , from there to the ferry port Swartz Bay and will take place on Ferry Tsawwassen its continuation on the Canadian mainland. It ends after a total of 73 km on Highway 1 in Surrey . The highway has four lanes along its entire length and is part of the Canadian National Highway System as a so-called core route .

course

Vancouver Island

The highway begins on the north side of Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. It branches off from Highway 1 to the northeast, but then runs parallel to Highway 1 for the first nine kilometers. Just seven kilometers after the start, Highway has left Victoria and now crosses the community of Saanich. Highway 17 holds its course north, while Highway 1 turns west. Two kilometers later, Highway 17A branches off to the west. This forms a route parallel to Highway 17 along the west bank of the Saanich Peninsula , on which both highways now lead in a northerly direction. Highway 17 touches the east bank of Elk Lake and then meets the sea coast of the Strait of Georgia at kilometer 22 . The highway grazes the outskirts of North Saanich . The last municipality on Vancouver Island through which the highway passes is Sidney . Victoria International Airport is also located in Sydney and is accessed by Highway 17. Shortly before the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal , the ferry port of BC Ferries north of Sydney, Highway 17A joins Highway 17 again. The section on Vancouver Island ends here and is continued by the ferry line to the mainland.

Mainland

The highway continues on the mainland, at the ferry port of Tsawwassen . The road leads over a two-kilometer-long dam that connects the ferry port with the mainland. After reaching the mainland, the highway leads north of the community of Tsawwassen . The highway leads through the eastern edge of the municipality of Ladner to meet Highway 99 after about 14 km . The following section, South Fraser Perimeter Road, is a new build that opened in December 2013. This route leads along the south bank of the Fraser River , it crosses the highways 91, 1A / 99A and 1, but without corresponding junctions to these highways. At Surrey Bend Regional Park the route leads south again to Highway 1 , where there is also a connection. Highway 17 ends there and continues south as Highway 15 .
