Delta is (a district municipality Engl. District municipality ) in the southwest of the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is located south of Vancouver in the mouth of the Fraser River on the border with the USA . The municipality belongs to the Metro Vancouver district and consists of the three cities Ladner , Tsawwassen and North Delta .

geography

The community is 17 miles south of Vancouver and is surrounded by water on three sides, the Fraser River to the north, the Strait of Georgia to the west, and Boundary Bay to the south. To the east is the parish of Surrey . The mouth of the Fraser River has numerous islands. The most important are Annacis Island in the northeast, Deas Island in the north and Westham Island in the west. The Burns Bog is a 40 km 2 large peat bog . Boundary Bay and the islands at the mouth of the Fraser River are important resting areas for migratory birds .

Delta consists of three sub-municipalities that are several kilometers apart. North Delta (52,000 inhabitants) is located in the far northeast on the Fraser River and borders directly on Surrey. Further downstream is Ladner (25,000 inhabitants), the administrative center of the municipality. Tsawwassen (25,000 inhabitants) is located on a peninsula between the Strait of Georgia and Boundary Bay. The 49th parallel runs through the middle of the peninsula, which also forms the border with the United States . At the southern tip of this peninsula is Point Roberts , an American exclave .

history

Before the European settlement, the plains and coastal areas of the deltas were inhabited by the Tsawwassen Indian tribe, who belong to the coastal Salish group. The Europeans explored this area for the first time in 1791, the Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza mistakenly believed the area to be an island, which he called "Isla Capeda". The first European settlers were the brothers Thomas Ellis Ladner and William Henry Ladner from Cornwall , who built a farm in 1868. In the first few decades, agriculture and fishing formed the economic basis of the community. The official establishment and the associated granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on November 10, 1879 ( incorporated as a District Municipality ).

Because of its location, Delta was relatively isolated well into the 20th century. This changed with the completion of several important traffic structures. In 1959 the George Massey Tunnel was opened, which connects Ladner with Richmond and Vancouver . In 1960 the Tsawwassen Terminal followed for the ferries to Vancouver Island and in 1962 Highway 99 received a new route through the Delta area. The population increased fivefold over the next twenty years. Since 1986 the Alex Fraser Bridge has connected the North Delta with New Westminster .

population

The last official census , the 2016 Census , showed a population of 102,238 inhabitants for the settlement, after the 2011 census showed a population of 99,863 inhabitants for the municipality. The population increased by 2.4% compared to the last census in 2011 and developed less than the provincial average, with a population increase of 5.6%. In the census period from 2006 to 2011, the number of inhabitants in the municipality had increased by a below-average 3.3%, while the provincial average increased by 7.0%. This below-average population growth has continued for more than 25 years.

At the 2016 census, the average age of the residents was 42.4 years, well above the provincial average of 42.3 years. The median age of the residents was determined to be 44.4 years. The median age of all residents in the province in 2016 was 43.0 years. For the 2011 census, a median age of 42.8 years was determined for the residents of the municipality and 41.9 years for the residents of the province.

In a census in 2005, around 23% of the population at the time were so-called "visible minorities" (as people of non-European descent are called in Canada). Furthermore, around 12,000 South Asians and 5,400 Chinese were counted among these at that time. 1,400 First Nations people lived in the Delta area , about a quarter of them from the Tsawwassen tribe , who own a reservation in Delta.

economy

North Delta and especially Annacis Island are heavily industrialized. Mainly service companies are located in Ladner. Tsawwassen is also an important tourist destination due to its location by the sea and the numerous parks. Large-scale agriculture is practiced in the interurban areas and on Wentworth Island , with berry orchards predominating.

The Greater Vancouver region is the third most important location for the North American film industry due to its scenic and cultural diversity. Numerous film and television productions have also been made in the municipality of Delta, particularly in Ladner and Tsawwassen. The best-known include Bill & Ted's Crazy Journey into the Future , Jumanji , Final Destination , Josie and the Pussycats , Insomnia , Snakes on a Plane , Murderous Headstart , X-Men: The Last Stand , Smallville , The X-Files FBI , Stargate Command SG-1 , Supernatural, and Da Vinci's Inquest cases .

traffic

About the Highway 99 and through the George Massey Tunnel Delta is with Richmond and Vancouver connected, via Highway 91 and the Alex Fraser Bridge with New Westminster . The Highway 10 connects with Langley and Surrey ago. The community is served by numerous TransLink bus routes.

Delta does not have public transport, the closest Sky Train station is in Surrey. Although a Canadian National Railway runs through the entire municipality, this only serves to transport goods to and from the Roberts Bank Superport , a loading terminal belonging to the port of Vancouver . From the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal , BC Ferries operate ferries to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands .

The Boundary Bay Airport east of Ladner is the airport with the fifth-most aircraft movements in Canada. Due to the short distance to Vancouver International Airport , however, it is not served by scheduled aircraft, but is used for general civil aviation , especially flight schools.
