Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle

Jumanji is an American fantasy - adventure film of 1995 by Joe Johnston with Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst in the lead roles.

action

The film begins in 1869 and shows two boys burying a wooden box in a forest at night, trying to get rid of something sinister.

After a timeline to 1969, this place has meanwhile become a construction site. Alan Parrish, son of a shoe manufacturer and exposed to the terror of a gang of young people, comes across the box in the excavation pit. He opens it and finds an old dice game in it. Alan starts playing this game with his girlfriend Sarah Whittle. But that soon turns out to be a big mistake. Once started, this game must be played to the end. When Sarah's first move, bats appear from the fireplace ; then Alan is "sucked" into the jungle (read: into the game) on his first move.

26 years later, the orphans Judy and Peter Sheperd, accompanied by their aunt Nora, move into the former splendid house of Alan's parents. Their parents were killed in a car accident in Canada. They too discover Jumanji in the attic and continue the game. Fortunately, they can rescue Alan, who is 26 years old, from the magical jungle. Alan's father had lost his fortune and the factory while looking for the son. To continue the game, they must find Sarah and persuade them to continue playing. Due to the event 26 years ago, she lives secluded in her parents' house, suffering from psychological stress. After a fainting spell, Alan carries her to the game and outsmarts her to the first throw. With every move, another obstacle appears, which hinders you on your way to the goal. These "obstacles" are animals (e.g. mosquitoes , monkeys , a lion , a herd of elephants ), natural disasters ( monsoons , quicksand , earthquakes), stampedes and the like. Ä. from the jungle . Together with Sarah, who was traumatized and somewhat hysterical by the event at the time , they finally put an end to the ghost that Jumanji caused after many adventures .

After the game ends, the time turns back to when Alan and Sarah started the game and Alan was sucked into the game. Both are again the children of yesteryear, but keep memories of their experiences. Alan makes up with his father, with whom he fell out at the beginning of the film. Jumanji throw them weighted down with stones into a river. Alan and Sarah, who now lead a life together, are able to dissuade Judy and Peter's parents from the plan in 1995 to start the road trip through Canada, in which they would have the accident.

In the last scene, Jumanji was washed up on a beach and attracts strollers with the drum sounds produced.

background

The film is based on the children's book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg , who won the Caldecott Medal a year later with the book published in 1981 . The popular board game Parcheesi was believed to be the inspiration for the game Jumanji in the book and film.

With an estimated budget of $ 50 million, the film grossed $ 100 million in the US alone. Worldwide it was $ 262 million.

Reviews

“A fantasy adventure staged rapidly in the action scenes that relies less on humor and poetry than on horror effects. More care was devoted to perfecting the animation technique than to the development of the story and the drawing of the characters. No entertainment for younger viewers because of the frightening effects and stale role clichés. "

“Director Joe Johnstons tailored his lively family film to computer tricks. However, you can also see from them what a rapid development the trick technology has taken since then, because some things seem a little out of date today. The bottom line is an entertaining number revue, in which Robin Williams can once again do the punch to his heart's content. "

“Objections to the bumpy story are flattened by rhinos. The tricks that were revolutionary at the time are now slightly outdated. This is probably one of the reasons why " Bad Teacher " director Jake Kasdan will soon be making a remake. Conclusion: yesterday's effect safari, but timelessly fast. "
