Joseph "Joe" Johnston (born May 13, 1950 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is an American designer and director.

life and career

During his student days, he answered an ad in the mid-1970s and met George Lucas , who was looking for people to produce a major science fiction project. As an assistant, he observed the development of the script for the first Star Wars film. Although he wanted to quit temporarily, he was instrumental in the development of the characters Yoda and Boba Fett .

After visiting the USC Film School with Lucas Recommendation 1977 Johnston one of the main designer on was Star Wars and the subsequent Star Wars and - Ewoks movies. He was also involved in the Indiana Jones films by Lucas and Steven Spielberg .

At the end of the 1980s he turned to his own directing projects. After the successful comedy Liebling, I've Shrunk the Children (1989) and working on the animated / real- life film Pagemaster (1994), he wanted to direct Forgotten World: Jurassic Park , but was n't finished with Jumanji . In the third part , six years later, he finally came into play, followed by Hidalgo (2004) with Viggo Mortensen . He then directed Wolfman (2010), followed by Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Bloody Mission - There's No Escape (2014) and the TV movie Lumen (2015). Most recently (as of November 2018) he was involved in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018) alongside Lasse Hallström .
