Ewoks - The Caravan of the Brave , also known as Star Wars: Ewoks - The Caravan of the Brave (original title: The Ewok Adventure , alternative title Star Wars: Ewok Adventures - Caravan of Courage ), is an American science fiction / fantasy film from 1984 directed by John Korty . After the Star Wars trilogy (1977-1983), George Lucas already had an idea for a television special of the genre that revolves around the Ewoks , teddy bear-like creatures from this film series. The film won an Emmy for Outstanding Optical Effects and received another nomination for Outstanding Children's Programs.

Classification in the Star Wars universe

The film is a spin-off of the Star Wars core saga and takes place sometime between The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi as well as after the events of The Ewoks on the forest moon Endor , on which the plot of The Return is also partly the Jedi Knight is settled. Like its sequel, the film is no longer part of the official Star Wars canon.

action

The Towani family, consisting of the parents Jeremitt Towani and Caterine Towani and the children Cindel Towani and Mace Towani, crash with their spaceship on the moon Endor. One night the parents are kidnapped by Gorax, a large monster. Mace and Cindel are now on their own, but only for a short time. They make friends with the Ewoks, little furry inhabitants of Endor. The Ewoks take the children to their village and look after them. Cindel and the Ewok Wicket W. Warrick quickly become friends. Mace and Cindel ask the Ewoks to help free their parents. So Ewok Deej and his three sons Wicket, Weechee and Widdle set out with the children. The Ewok woodcutter Chukha Trok and the Ewok priestess Kaink join them on the journey. On their adventure together, they master all kinds of dangers. You will encounter Barra monsters, deadly waters and fairy-like wisties, one of which, Izrina, befriends Mace.

When the brave caravan finally reaches Gorax's cave, Wicket and Widdle stay in front of the entrance to the cave to take care of Cindel. Mace and the rest of the Ewoks are on their way. In the cave they have to climb over a huge net to cross the cliffs. They meet a giant spider. Chukha Trok smashes the cobweb with his ax and the spider falls down the cliffs. When the spider reached the bottom, Wicket now has to defend his brother and Cindel with their lives. He kills the spider with his own knife. The others are already sneaking around in the cave, but Gorax has already noticed the intruders. Izrina irritates Gorax so much that he runs into a trap and falls into an abyss. However, Chukha Trok is also killed in the process. Everyone thinks Gorax is dead, but he climbs back up. However, Mace kills him with Chukha Trok's ax. Then the Ewoks and the Towani family return to the village and celebrate. The Towani family decides to stay until the spaceship is repaired.

Filming

The film was shot in the mountains and forests of Marin County , not far from the Skywalker Ranch . The Endor scenes for Return of the Jedi were filmed here in Redwood National Park . Joe Johnston was the film's production designer, having previously worked as the concept designer of the three previous Star Wars films and writing the book Ewoks, The Adventures of Teebo: A Tale of Magic and Suspense . So he had enough knowledge to design the Ewoks environment in Endor. It only took nine weeks for the film to be finished; six weeks to shoot with the actors and three weeks to post. During this time there was also a week-long post-shoot directed by George Lucas .

Technology and effects

The effects in the film are from ILM . Elaborate stop-motion animation was used for the film , as the go-motion animation was simply too expensive for this project. Phil Tippett and John Berg (Oscar winners) were responsible for the stop-motion effects, including bringing the Condor dragons , the Blurrgs and the Boar wolves to life in the two Ewok films. Over 25 matte drawings and at least 50 blue screen recordings were made for the film .
