Burl Ives icle Ivanhoe (* 14. June 1909 in Hunt City , Illinois ; † 14. April 1995 in Anacortes , Washington ) was an American folk - singer , author and actor .

Life

In the 1930s Ives began to roam the country as a musician. He had a popular radio show in the 1940s. In 1948 he published his first book, The Wayfaring Stranger .

In 1946, Ives played the singing cowboy in the movie Smoky, King of the Prairie . The many other films he starred in include Beyond Eden (1955), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Far Country (1958), for which he won an Oscar for Best Male Supporting Actor, and Our Man in Havana (1959) based on the novel by Graham Greene .

In the 1940s he enjoyed success with some old folk songs , including Lavender Blue (his first hit, a 17th century folk song), Foggy Foggy Dew (an Irish folk song), Blue Tail Fly (a Civil War song), and Big Rock Candy Mountain (an old hobo song). Burl Ives also wrote the first LP version of the song 'Ghostriders in the sky'.

In the 1950s, Ives cooperated with the Committee on Un-American Activities , denouncing Pete Seeger and others as possible communists .

Ives began singing country tracks in the 1960s . In 1962 he had three top 20 hits with A Little Bitty Tear , Call Me Mr In-Between and Funny Way of Laughing . Also in 1962 he had his last top 40 hit with Mary Ann Regrets . In the following two years he was able to place himself in the charts four times, but only in the lower ranks.

He participated in several television productions, including as a narrator in the puppet cartoon Rudolf Rotnase (1964), Pinocchio (1968) and Roots (1977). In Rudolf Rotnase he also sang his song "A Holly Jolly Christmas".

Burl Ives died of cancer at the age of 85.
