Anacortes [ ænəkɔːɹtɪs ] is a city ( City ) in Skagit County of the US state of Washington . In the 2010 census, the place on Fidalgo Island had 15,778 inhabitants.
geography
Anacortes is located on Fidalgo Island . According to the United States Census Bureau , Anacortes has an area of 36.7 km², of which 30.5 km² is land and 6.2 km² (= 16.93%) is water.
Anacortes is surrounded in the north by Puget Sound with the San Juan Islands (three sides) and in the east is separated from the mainland by the Swinomish Channel .
The weather is milder than anywhere else in the Pacific Northwest , as the Olympic Mountains absorb a lot of rainfall.
history
The place was founded in 1877 by Amos Bowman with the opening of a post office. It was named after Anna Curtis, the maiden name of the founder's wife. The place received city rights on May 19, 1891.
Transport and economy
Anacortes is the only place on the San Juan Islands that is accessible by car.
The place has a ferry terminal, which is mainly used by the Washington State Ferries . From here the islands Lopez Island , Shaw Island , Orcas Island and San Juan Island as well as via Sidney , Victoria (both in Canada) are served.
Anacortes is a starting point for recreational boating; there is also a marina here .
There is also a brewery in Anacortes.
