Skagit County is a county in the state of Washington , United States . It has 102,979 inhabitants. The county seat is in Mount Vernon .

The county covers an area of 4,974 square kilometers, of which 4,494 square kilometers (89.65 percent) are land and 480 square kilometers (10.35 percent) are water. In the southeast of the county is the 2,719 meter high Dome Peak .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 102,979 people. There were 38,852 households and 27,351 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.49% White, 0.44% African American, 1.85% Native American, 1.49% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, and 7.17% other races Groups; 2.40% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.20% of the population.
Of the 38,852 households, 32.80% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.60% were married couples living together, 9.70% were single mothers. 29.60% were not families. 23.30% are single households and 10.00% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.06.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 8.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.90% between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.60% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.60% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,381 , and the median income for a family is $ 48,347. Males had a median income of $ 37,207 versus $ 26,123 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,256. 11.10% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. 13.50% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.80% were 65 years of age or older.
Protected areas
Part of North Cascades National Park and all of Rockport State Park are in Skagit County .
