Deception Pass Bridge

The Deception Pass Bridge is a bridge in Washington state that connects Whidbey Island and Fidalgo Island . It's a popular spot for photographers looking to capture the beauty of the Puget Sound . The construction of the bridge was a Public Works Administration project carried out by workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps . The completion of the bridge later enabled the United States Navy to set up Naval Air Station Whidbey Island on Whidbey Island and contributed to the growth of Oak Harbor .

history

In the spring of 1792, Joseph Whidbey , George Vancouver's chief navigator, sailed the HMS Discovery through the narrow passage now known as Deception Pass . He thereby proved that it was not a small bay, as the Spaniards had assumed, but a deep and lively channel that connects the Juan de Fuca Strait with the Saratoga Passage and the mainland of the supposed peninsula separates, which thus emerged as Fidalgo Island and Whidbey Island; this is where the name “deception” comes from , in English “deception”.

In the early years of the 20th century, travelers used a ferry that did not operate according to a fixed timetable for the crossing from Fidalgo Island to Whidbey Island. The ferry was called by the blow of a hammer on a saw blade, then it was time to wait.

Due to the tide, the current has a maximum flow speed of 9 knots in the Deception Pass and 10 knots in the Canoe Pass below the bridge .

The bridge actually consists of two parts. One leads over the Canoe Pass to the north , the second over the Deception Pass in the south. Construction began in August 1934 and the completed bridge was released at noon on July 31, 1935. The Wallace Bridge and Structural Co. from Seattle supplied 460 tons of steel for the 156 m long arch over the Canoe Pass and 1,130 tons for the 297.5 m long span over the Deception Pass. The construction cost was $ 482,000.

In 1982 the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

It was repainted in 1983 and 1997.
