The Puget Sound ( ˈpjuːdʒɪt saʊnd ) is a sea bay in the northwest of the US state Washington .
The approximately 150 km long, island-rich and widely branched bay was named by George Vancouver after Peter Puget , one of his officers. The Indians of this area called the Puget Sound "Whulge". Point Wilson on the Olympia Peninsula and Point Partridge on Whidbey Island are to the west of the main north entrance . There are also two other entrances.
On July 4, 1792, Vancouver claimed the bay for Great Britain . It became part of Oregon Country and in 1846 the Oregon Compromise (Oregon Treaty) to the territory of the United States of America .
In 1855 and 1856 armed clashes broke out between the United States Army and several Indian groups in Puget Sound, named after the Puget Sound War region .
With the Treaty of Point Elliott , 22 of the nearly 30 Indian tribes were relocated to reservations. Many place and river names remind of them. Seattle, for example, is the twisted version of the name of an Indian chief .
The urban region of the Puget Sound is located around the city of Seattle and comprises nine administrative districts (counties). In addition to the larger city of Tacoma, there are four smaller cities on the Sound. Both Seattle and Tacoma have large industrial ports on Puget Sound.
One of the largest employers in the region is Microsoft Corporation , which has its headquarters in Redmond , a separate suburb of Seattle . Almost half of all Microsoft employees worldwide, namely around 42,000, work in the Puget Sound region. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard is also on Puget Sound, another shipyard, the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company , closed in 1987.
The strait gives the Puget Sound AVA its name.
